Testing your digestive system

How do medical stool tests differ from functional medicine tests that you can do at home?

Summary

  • Medical stool testing is not bad, but it is limited.
  • They tend to look for 12-15 pathogens that cause vomiting and diarrhoea.
  • If you don’t have these symptoms, most doctors won’t bother running the tests.
  • The technology used in. medical stool testing is “old school” (or “old stool” if you excuse the pun!!)
  • Advances in our understanding of the microbiome have been possible through genomic (DNA) analysis.
  • The medical system still predominantly uses microscope analysis.
  • Some of the private labs have moved across to genomic/DNA analysis (we’ve been using the technology for a decade now).
  • The private labs who run functional stool testing look at a much wider array of markers.
  • Many medically trained integrative and functional medicine doctors use private labs as they are deemed to be superior in many cases.
  • You can order a test at any time – there’s no waiting list and you don’t have to beg your doctor to get one!
  • The drawback is that you’ll usually need to pay for it out of pocket… but what price your health????
