Why you get bloated and what to do about it

Part three – Bad Bugs

Summary

  • The digestive system houses trillions of microbes, which work together with our cells to maintain ideal function.
  • However, it is common for these microbes to fall out of balance due to poor diet, stress, toxins, cute infections, antibiotic use, etc.
  • H. pylori, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), yeast overgrowth (Candida) and parasites can all cause problems.
  • SIBO and Candida can cause a lot of bloating because they ferment certain types of fibre, carbs and sugars.
  • The fermentation process produces a lot of gas, which in turn causes bloating as well as other digestive symptoms such as heartburn, acid reflux, and sometimes constipation or diarrhoea.
  • H. pylori can predispose you to SIBO, parasites and Candida because it has been shown to alter the microbiome and to reduce stomach acid levels.
  • Alas, it’s impossible to know which bad bugs are present without testing because they can all cause similar symptoms.
  • Fortunately you can run tests for all these microbial imbalances using test kits at home, even if your doctor refuses to test you.
