Why you get bloated and what to do about it

Part four – Bad Toxins & Gases

Summary

  • Microbial overgrowth results in fermentation, which in turn produces gases.
  • The gases – mainly methane, hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide bloat you up.
  • Hydrogen sulphide can be very irritating to the intestinal lining and acts as mitochondrial toxin (impairs energy production).
  • Microbe overgrowth––mainly SIBO and yeast/fungal overgrowth––also produces other toxins, including lipopolysacharrides (LPS), arabinose, alcohol, and gliotoxin.
  • These compounds can make you feel tired, affect your mood, focus, memory, sleep, hormone balance, skin and contribute to symptoms in any or all of these areas.
  • They may also damage the intestinal lining and cause “leaky gut syndrome”, potentially increasing your risk of developing autoimmune diseases.
  • Without running the appropriate tests, it’s hard to know precisely what is going on.
