The causes of heartburn and acid reflux

Part 4 – How medical and other drugs cause heartburn and acid reflux

Summary

  • Pharmaceutical and recreational drugs can cause heartburn and acid reflux.
  • NSAIDs are probably the biggest offenders because they can damage the stomach lining.
  • Cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption are big contributors (in my teens and twenties, I used to get a lot of heartburn from drinking alcohol).
  • Drugs can either irritate the stomach lining, or weaken the lower esophageal sphincter.
  • If you suspect your meds might be causing issues for you, then speak with your doc.
  • DISCLAIMER: please don’t discontinue any of your meds without speaking with your doctor.
