I’m not the biggest tennis fan in the world but I’ve been following the case of Novak Djokovic closely since I read an article that, after being diagnosed with celiac disease, he cut gluten out of his diet. Djokovic is now ranked the number one tennis player on the planet, and has been since July 2011. Here’s a list of his achievements since he eliminated this nightmare food from his diet:
– made the final of the U.S. Open
– won the Davis Cup and Australian Open
– defeated Rafael Nadal four times
– went on a 43-match winning streak, the third longest of the Open era.
A coincidence? I think not.
Once you understand the role that gluten can play in creating ill health, it’s not hard to see why such a simple change could create such an enormous improvement in performance:
The New England Journal of Medicine stated that gluten-intolerance can cause 55 different diseases.
It causes inflammation and pain in the intestines, which can also spill over to cause an inflammatory response that may affect literally any or every tissue in the body.
