Stewed cinnamon apples – a great gut healthy recipe

I picked up this stewed cinnamon apples recipe from Michael Ash DO ND and have found it to be incredibly helpful in bringing down inflammation and offering healing effects to the gut.

H pylori and other bad bugs cause inflammation and immune responses in your stomach and intestine, which is what causes your pain, burning, and even constipation and diarrhoea.

You can modulate your immune system and reduce inflammation using food, herbs and spices.

The combination of apple and cinnamon can work wonders.

Stewed Cinnamon Apples – Ingredients:

Stewed cinnamon apples

  • 6 cooking apples (or apples of choice preferably grown organically)
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup raisins/sultanas (for added sweetness and fibre)
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • * you can use pears if you have an intolerance to apples

Stewed Cinnamon Apples – Method:

  • Peel and core the apples and chop them into small evenly sized pieces.
  • Put all the ingredients in a covered, heavy-bottomed pan and cook for about 15 minutes, stirring regularly.
  • Cook until soft with rough shapes, no longer identifiable as apple slices
  • The colour should be a “russet brown” with the cinnamon effect.

Your stewed cinnamon apples can be eaten warm, or cold.

Why does this recipe work?

Apples (and pears) are easier to digest when they’re cooked.

The cooking process breaks down cellulose making it easier for your digestive system to break down the components.

Research indicates apples, pears (and in some cases, carrots) provide the following benefits, especially if they are organically grown:

  • Allergy protection against rhinitis and asthma
  • Phenols in apples and pears offer excellent antioxidant protection
  • Inflammation control
  • Promote optimal gut bacteria balance
  • Good source of fibre to help detoxification and bacterial balance

Cinnamon has been studied widely and has been shown to:

  • Reduce inflammatory chemical production in the gut
  • Promote immune balance in the gut
  • Fight unwanted microbes in the gut
  • Improve blood sugar levels
  • Act as an antioxidant
  • May be of benefit in reducing cholesterol levels and improving cardiovascular health

Realistic expectations

While the stewed cinnamon apple recipe is great, on its own it may not be enough to fix all your symptoms.

Avoiding “trigger foods”, eating a generally healthier diet and removing H pylori along with other bad bugs is also really important.

There’s tons more helpful information like this in the The H Pylori Diet and accompanying cookbook.
